Description:
This organism was a large, dark insect with a black exoskeleton. The organism had dark wings and a yellow/green hue in the thorax region. This specimen had two antennas in the head region. The bug was roughly 2-3 inches in diameter of the body. This insect was very round in shape with linear wings and antennas. The largest region of this insect was the abdomen.
Habitat:
The specimen photographed was found flying in and out of flowers of a tree in a suburban environment located in Tampa, Florida.
Geographic Distribution:
Insects in the genus Xylocopa can be located in the southern region of the United States. They are also found in the Eastern portion of the United States and have been seen as north as New York.
Higher Taxonomic Classification:
This organism is an insect and in class Insecta because it had an exoskeleton and was divided into three sections head, thorax, and abdomen.
Additional Information:
This insect interacted with nearby flowers as a source of food.
