Heard what sounded like a lone frog croaking on a warm day. I recorded and played it back to the frog, after which he responded by croaking along to the recording. Because the river-bed was overrun with shrub, I couldn't access where he was, but I estimate I was within 3 to 5 meters from him.
Legume family. Doubly compound leaves. 2 leaflets each of which are compound. Tries to be a tree, turns into bush and thorns get thicker. Damage to plant induces herbivore defense.
This was a juvenile. I had a very clear view of it in the water but it flew away quickly.
Habitat: Coastal Prairie location: Brazoria county 5 miles north of Sweeny. elevation 32’ Columbia bottomland-San Bernard River flood plain. Mixed Live Oak, Water Oak, Cedar Elm, Green Ash trees with some open pasture. Understory is Yaupon, mixed smaller Oaks, etc., Palmetto and Greenbriar. Soil type Pledger Clay.
