Female 3.5 mm long, collected from the inner bark of a slash pine stem that had been cut down in land clearance activities. One male in the nuptial chamber, with 6 females working on constructing egg galleries. The tree was already dead when infested, so there were no pitch tubes on the bark, just reddish-brown boring dust. This is one of the Ips species that have some slight sexual dimorphism; the male frons (face) has a much larger central tubercle just above the mandibles, and a shallow fovea (depression) above that.
