המועדפים של lahaina

Unusual find at rose canyon today. I’d guess someone threw it out a car window since it was close to the road, and I doubt a bird would carry it so far inland. Covered in Bryozoa so almost certainly collected from the wild.

Doesn’t resemble any species nearby, and given my thoughts on how it got there it theoretically could have come from anywhere.

I found these seedlings underneath my hedgerow of Japanese boxwood, and the “leaves” feel almost as if soft baby pine needles. And though it has been suggested that they’re Whisk Ferns, they seem to have real roots.

Update 6 weeks later: yes these are indeed Whisk Ferns, the roots being rhizomes!
