Definitely a new species. Entirely subterannean in habits, seemingly very restricted in range and only found on forested mountains in Marin and Sonoma county. Probably fairly sensitive to development and habitat disturbance.

Updated 11/26/2022. ID’d to species. Photos of male pleopod II added. Curvature on appendix masculina is not exactly as illustrated in the description, but is quite similar. Uropod exopod is subequal in length with endopod: a diagnostic character for the species. Without material from the type locality, I’m calling it T. subequalum.
Probably the most abundant invertebrate in most of the spring runs in the Lower Canyons. ID assumed to be T. subequalum based on proximity to the type locality in Big Bend National Park. This is the only described species in the region.
Whole body dorsal photo is a female. Ventral photo is a male showing appendix masculina on pleopod II.
Dissection and more detailed comparison with T. subequalum will be made in the future.

i was really confused by this weird little critter. i have never seen it before - i found it attached to a piece of washed in sargassum- but if i’m right about it being a tanaid, it probably colonised the sargassum when it was inshore, rather than living on the high seas. it was big, like half the length of my finger. it looked like a dead stick from the top, but then i saw it had pale yellow antennae and lots of legs. it could crawl and also could swim! it did this cute twirly kind of swimming, like it was always travelling in a spiral through the water. would appreciate any ideas on an id!

Clung to the beak of a Whimbrel that was foraging in the seaweed, the bird could not dislodge it, after a couple of minutes the isopod dropped off. The Whimbrel continued to feed with the isopod on board.
