Observation of the Day and Weekly Winner: July 10

Our first full week (M-F) is complete! What a great 10 days it's been so far, with huge thanks to our 7 observers and 33 identifiers for helping collect 109 observations of 90 different species! If you want to help out but haven't been able to snap a photo outside, go to the observations already posted and see if you can help confirm their identities - a pretty flower is just a pretty flower until it has a name!

Today's observation is from Mary Price: the Intermediate Hooded Owlet (Cucullia intermedia). It is a moth of the family Noctuidae, and is found from coast to coast in the US, including southern Canada. It's common in the Inter-mountain West, like in our home county of Grand County!

Hooded Owlet

The wingspan is 45–50 mm, and adults are "on wing" from April through October. There are two generations per year. The larvae feed on the leaves of birch, poplar, willow and other trees and shrubs, as well as flowers of Lactuca and other Asteraceae species - some of which are found here in Grand!

And, Mary is our winner this week! She has won a super-handy mug from Two Pines Supply, as well as a Colorado Headwaters Land Trust baseball cap! Winners are chosen at random each week, so keep submitting your observations and you might win something cool, too!

We can't wait to see what you observe around the county. Join our Project today!
