Observation of the Day and Weekly Winner: July 31

It's the LAST DAY of the project! Thank you so much to everyone who has participated - be sure to submit your final observations by midnight tonight! On Monday, Aug 03, we'll announce our monthly winner!! That winner will be the one participant who submitted the most observations throughout the whole month.

Today's Observation of the Day is the Common Lamb's-Quarters (Chenopodium album), observed by @ccfesz12 ! Common Lamb's-Quarters is often seen as a weed, and goes by a variety of other names, such as melde, goosefoot, and wild spinach. It is naturalized nearly all around the world, and while a specific origin is difficult to find most botanists agree that its native range is in Europe. It likes nitrogen-rich soils, such as those considered 'wasteland.' It can grow up to 3 meters tall, but often bends down as it flowers. It has many different kinds of leaves up the stalk, and small flowers.

Observation of the Day: July 29

Two days left! Can you help us get to 300? Only 18 more observations needed!

Today's Observation of the Day is the Great Blanketflower (Gaillardia aristata), observed by Lindsay Rice! The Blanketflower is in the sunflower family, and can be found throughout most of Canada and the United States, as either a native or naturalized perennial wildflower. It is also naturalized in Europe, Australia, and South America. The flower can grow up to 2.5 feet, has lance-shaped leaves near the base, and several naked stems holding the flowers. The flowers, as seen in the picture below, has a brown/red center with purple disc floets, and a fringe of yellow and reddish florets.

Observation of the Day: July 27

Woo! We're getting closer to a round 300 observations - get outside and help us reach our goal!

Today's Observation of the Day is the Bird's-foot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), observed by user @ccfesz12. This flower is invasive in North America, but is native to most of Eurasia and North Africa. It is a perennial herbaceous member of the pea family (Fabaceae), and can look like some clovers. The name 'bird's foot' refers to the appearance of the seed pods on their stalk. It is often used as forage and is widely used as food for livestock.

Observation of the Day and Weekly Winner: July 24

It's the end of Week 3! Thank you to everyone who has contributed observations and identifications so far! We're up to 249 observations - can we make it to 300 by the end of the month??

Today's Observation of the Day is the bumble bee (Genus Bombus) by Mary Price! Bees are found nearly all over the world and play an integral part of the global ecosystem, being pollinators. If you know the specific species of this photo, please help us identify it! Click on the link below the photo and in the comment section of the page select "suggest an identification."

Observation of the Day: July 23

We broke 240 observations with over 150 different species of flora and fauna found in Grand County! Today's Observation of the Day is the Clustered Bellflower (Campanula glomerata) by Lindsay Rice!

The clustered bellflower, also called Dane's blood, is found throughout the northern hemisphere from North America to Europe to Asia (it's native to the latter two, but naturalized in North America). This flower is perennial and grows to anywhere between 7.9" and 23.6," although it's been measured to be nearly three feet tall. The stem is simple, and its basal leaves are petiolated, oval-lanceolate, and heart-shaped. The flower itself is bell-shaped and usually an inch long, and the plant flowers between June and September.

Observation of the Day: July 22

Every day we get more observations and more participants! Today's Observation of the Day is the Boreal Chorus Frog (Pseudacris maculata), observed by JD Krones!

The Boreal chorus frog is found throughout the Intermountain West, from Canada's Northwest Territories all the way down to the Four Corners area of Arizona and New Mexico. It can reach 30mm (1.8 inches) in length, and is most often brown but occasionally green with three broken dorsal stripes. There is also a dark band stretching from the snout, across the eye, and down the side of the frog. The frog lives amongst vegetation, so to help it climb small grasses it has slightly enlarged toe pads.

Observation of the Day: July 21

Happy Tuesday! Today's Observation of the Day is a gorgeous Gunnison's Mariposa Lily (Calochortus gunnisonii), observed by Jen Gold!

The Gunnison's Mariposa Lily grows from bulbs, which are edible. It has bell-shaped flowers with three broad, rounded white (sometimes pink, magenta, or yellow) petals and three thin, shorter, greenish, pointed sepals. In the middle is a ring of fine greenish-yellow hairs, below a thin, circular band of purple, all centered on six large anthers and a three pronged stigma. Flowers are about 2 inches in diameter. The thin, bendy stalks bear a few grass-like leaves, and can branch a few times towards the top.

Observation of the Day: July 20

This weekend must have been a huge one for getting outside, because we added a whopping 30 new observations! Today's Observation of the Day, however, is actually from Friday because it is such a cool shot! It's a beautiful photo of a Red-tail Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis by Erica Bean.

Red-tails can be seen pretty much throughout North America, as north as Alaska and even as far south as Panama. It is one of the most common members of the Buteo genus in the world, and is also referred to as a 'chickenhawk.' The red-tailed hawk is one of the largest members of the genus as well, typically weighing from 1.5 to 3.5lbs and measuring 18–26in in length. Their wingspan can range from 3'7"–4'8". Females tend to be slightly larger than males.

Observation of the Day and Weekly Winner: July 17

It's been a wonderful 17 days of the project! We have a team of 11 observers and 47 identifiers helping to collect 199 observations of 135 different species! If you want to help out but haven't been able to snap a photo outside, go to the observations already posted and see if you can help confirm their identities - a pretty flower is just a pretty flower until it has a name!

Today's observation is from Sadie Jackson: the gorgeous Harebell (Campanula rotundifolia). The Harebell is a perennial, flowering, herbaceous plant in the bellflower family. While primarily found in Europe (the British Isles, to be specific), some species can be found in our mountains as well! If you think you can help identify this flower even further, and any others that have been posted, please head on over the project and lend a hand!

Sadie is also our weekly winner! She has won a super-handy mug from Two Pines Supply, as well as a Colorado Headwaters Land Trust hat! Winners are chosen at random each week, so keep submitting your observations and you might win something cool, too! Check out her observations here: https://www.inaturalist.org/people/sadie50

We can't wait to see what you observe around the county. Join our Project today!
