An interesting, transitional population at the interface of species E. anfractuosus from the south-eastern region (robust plants with big flowers and central middle spines) and E. dichroacanthus from the south-western region (very small flowers of the "dichroacanthus" type and absence of a central middle spines.

Echinofossulocactus x dichroacantho-lamellosus. To the east of San Luis de la Paz towards Xichú, two species, dichroacanthus and lamellosus, came into contact over a large area. A beautiful stabilized hybrid has developed that has the same clustering strategy and the same beautiful large pale pinkish-violet flower as the E. lamellosus, and at the same time wide, flat, often bicolor upper middle spines, less deep ribs, and missing central middle spines which is characteristic of the E. dichroacanthus. The original parent species are still present on the edges of the area.
It is often invalidly referred to as E. dichroacanthus var. violaciflorus there. Invalidly because, according to the description, neither dichroacanthus nor violaciflorus ever form groups and that they have only a small flowers till three cm; petals with a middle purple stripes. Both mentioned characteristics do not fit to this observed plants. Moreover, if we accept E. violaciflorus (redundant name for dichroacanthus), it should occur in Zacatecas.
