Came into kitchen from the garden. If one touches it it falls to the ground as if dead, only to start moving again after a while.

After I photographed the caterpillar on a shrub, I snipped off the twig, put it on a paver and took more photos. It lay motionless. When I returned five minutes later, it had moved out of sight and I couldn't find it again.

Only after I had taken the first photographs did I realise the caterpillar was dead,which explains the small white maggots crawling on it.
